Trustee: Microbusiness Advancement Center

Tucson, AZ

Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
Our agency services start up small businesses and small businesses in growth phases. We do this through technical assistance, one on one business counseling and preparation for lending. The Kiva program is a natural extension of our work and ability to service our clients.
What is the mission of your organization?
The Microbusiness Advancement Center (MAC) is a non-profit organization that helps with the growth and development of small businesses by providing quality business consulting, training and financing advice. MAC assists clients throughout Southern Arizona with programs that include: ■Business Planning and Development ■Financial Management and Resources ■Technical Assistance for Loans
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
Established in 1990, MAC has been providing support to small business owners through its comprehensive hands on training programs, individual professional counseling, and lending assistance. MAC has accomplished in Tucson what few cities have done by creating a one stop shop for small business services, supported by the SBA. All of these programs have enabled MAC to successfully develop entrepreneurs and help fuel a thriving and varied small business community inTucson. Last year, our programs and technical assistance were responsible for placing over $10 Million in business loans in southernArizona, created 511 new jobs, 137 new businesses, and assisted over 1200 entrepreneurs.
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.
We are part of the Arizona Small Business Developmment Centers Network, the Women's Business Centers and receive funding from the Small Business Administration. We are members of Tucson Metro Chamber, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber, the Oro Valley Chamber, the Marana Chamber, Local First Arizona and the Arizona Small Business Association.
How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
We provide a needs assessment process for all entrepreneurs. When we feel the business is ready to receive the loan we will endorse. This may include viewing a business plan, financial projections and market analysis. If an entrepreneur completes the business planning program or works with a counselor to complete that process, they will be endorsed.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
We offer technical assistance classes, one on one counseling and direction toward other financing opportunities. The services are listed on our website. Our goal is economic impact and job creation. The more we offer the client, the better we meet that goal. We will also inform others of the loan through facebook, linkedin and twitter as well as public media.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
Again, our goal is economic impact and job creation. We work with entrepreneurs to ensure their best chances of sucess to meet our core goals. The businesses we endorse must have a plan in place and a real chance for sucess. That is how we work with all of our local entrepreneurs who seek our services.
