Trustee: Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light

Little Rock, AR

Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
We are individuals and congregations who share a concern for the earth's environment from a unique, nonpartisan, theological perspective. We have an interest in encouraging entrepreneurs who work in the fields of energy efficiency and clean, renewable energy. Through energy efficiency improvement projects at houses of worship, community buildings, and group homes in low-income areas, we have worked with young people who have up-to-date skills in energy audits and efficiency improvements. We hope to create opportunities for those people who have proved valuable to our mission work.
What is the mission of your organization?
Arkansas Interfaith Power and Light is an organization of individuals and congregations who share a concern for the earth's environment from a unique, nonpartisan, theological perspective.
In the past, how effective have you been in achieving this mission?
We have offered numerous luncheons, workshops, and retreats that have been well-attended. The events raised awareness levels of environmental issues. We have conducted successful retrofits at seven community buildings that resulted in increased energy efficiency, as measured by blower door tests. We make presentations to classes and gatherings of children, youth, and adults.
Do you belong to any organizational networks -- nationally, regionally, or locally? If yes, please list.

How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?
We will endorse people who have volunteered their time for our mission projects in which we provide energy efficiency improvements at houses or worship, group homes, and community buildings in low-income areas. We will consider their willing attitudes, knowledge, skill levels, responsible actions, follow-through, and results of retrofit efforts. Test-in and test-out processes before and after each project will measure results of efforts.
How do you plan to support the borrower, both before and after the loan is disbursed?
Through networking, we hope to connect borrowers with potential customers in need of energy efficiency improvements. We receive applications from organizations and inquiries from individuals. In some cases, we may partner with the borrower on a project. In other cases, we may introduce a potential customer to the borrower.
How will you help us ensure that the loans you endorse have a significant and positive social impact?
Through proper energy efficiency improvements, individuals and organizations in low-income areas will spend less on utility bills and more on other basic needs. This includes community buildings and group homes that will have more financial resources for programs that serve low-income populations. Typically low-income people spend a disproportionate amount of their income on utility bills because they live in poorly insulated homes. Weatherization of their homes is a form of social justice that helps lift them out of poverty. The process of connecting borrowers to customers provides green jobs that strengthen the economy.
