Saint Louis, MO
Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?
SBRC is a resource center for small business owners... we take pride in helping small business owners achieve thier dreams by surrounding them with the knowledge and resources that is needed to build sustainable businesses. Kiva offers an innovative solution to peer lending that we encourage each business to use in our current business development model. Kiva will allow our consultants an opportunity to give businesss owners an additional resource of financing outside of tradional lending sources.
What is the mission of your organization?
The mission of St. Louis Business Resource Center is to provide technical assistance and resources for small business owners in our efforts to develop our community.
What indicators/metrics do you use to evaluate and monitor your impact?
St. Louis Business Resource Center monitors our efforts in three ways: 1. Number of active members who join our organization 2. Number of new business owners we help to create 3. Number of contacts / consulting sessions / seminars we offer within the community
How have you performed in the past, according to these indicators/metrics?
St. Louis Business Resource Center is an education orgranization at it's core. We educate business owners on the fundamentals of business prinicpals and how it applies in real world application. For the past two years, we have gained over 80 active members, developed over 200 new ventures and assisted over 900 individuals with our programs and services.
How will you determine whether or not the business plans of the Borrower(s) you endorse are sound?
Each client that SBRC will endorse must complete an application and interview with our consultants. During this process we will review their information and references to determine their character and ability to run a successful company. We will review their business plan, credit report, personal financial statement and their projected use of the proceeds. SBRC has a long history of business development and helping turn around a community. We believe in helping clients climb out of poverty to reach their dreams. Kiva will provide an additional vital resource to our current list of resources and services.
How will you know whether the Borrower(s) you endorse will have the character to repay a loan?
SBRC believes in the character of the people we serve. We understand a credit report can not tell the full picture of a person's character. We will ask each client for personal and trade character references. We will review the history of each client to ensure they have a history of outstanding character. SBRC will also stress the importance of using their inner circle as their first line of lending in this model.
Please describe what type of business, financial, technical or other support you plan on providing to the Borrower(s) you endorse:
SBRC is a membership based organization that has a host of seminars, conferences and one on one consultations. Each client that seeks a loan will be ask to meet monthly with a consultant to review the "health" of the business.
How will you establish whether the Borrower(s) you endorse are in debt, or have a history of debt? How will what you find affect your endorsement of their loan application?
The clients that seek a loan from Kiva will have to go through an application process with SBRC. Each client will have to complete an personal financial statement and review of their credit report with a consultant. In the review of thier pfs, our consultants can determine if the client is taken on more debt than they can handle. We wish to make loans based on character and capicity.
Why can't the Borrower(s) you endorse access traditional loans?
SBRC understand that many in low income areas have low credit scores due to predatory lending practices. Many have been taken advantage of because of their lack of education and the poor economy. It is our goal to properly educate the community and assist them in developing proper relationships with financial institutions.
